Unfortunately, it’s an often overlooked and ignored subject.
We’ve already posted a short guide to minimalism. Now, we’re going to talk about the mental processes that occur when living a life of excess, and how simplifying your life can benefit you in extraordinary ways.
Living a life of excess is known to create overarching feelings of depression and anxiety. And we aren’t talking about grabbing seconds from the barbeque, either; we’re talking about surrounding yourself with an unnecessary amount of material possessions.
It isn’t just conjecture, either – there are plenty of studies that solidify the parallel between materialism and unhappiness. Our favorite (a series of studies published in the journal Motivation and Emotion) show that as people become more materialistic, their sense of autonomy, good relationships, and sense of purpose diminish considerably.
The good news? As soon as that materialism is eradicated, their sense of wellbeing rose.
If you still aren’t convinced, there are studies that link materialism to loneliness, low self-esteem, and decreased senses of social responsibility – no gimmicks.
No, you aren’t diseased if you don’t lead a minimalist lifestyle. But, you can tremendously increase your overall sense of well-being by leading a simple life and doing away with the unnecessary possessions that serve only to bog you down.
All of the studies cited above give merit to this: A simple life devoid of clutter and excess give way to a life of happiness, selflessness, and autonomy.
It starts small. Removing the clutter from your work area, and finding that you’re suddenly thinking clearer, streamlining your productivity. It trickles down from wherever you start – the sense of happiness and clarity found through simplicity will seed its way through your life, as cliché as that may sound.
Less debt → Less stress
More space in your home → Less stress
Less work to maintain a materialistic lifestyle → Less stress
That’s why minimalism is a recurring concept throughout all industries. It’s attractive, it’s simple, and it works.
We’ve known that from the jump. That’s why we created Ridge. That’s why we focus on giving people a tool to help take that small step toward cutting out the excess in their lives - starting with their wallet.
Everyone deserves some headspace. It isn’t easy, but the best way to create that much-needed respite from a cluttered life is to start with your surroundings.
You’ll find so much more time for loved ones and personal endeavors.
